How we craft the Rustica Urns
There are twelve elements or pieces in each urn and 22 different processes to complete each urn.
Product details
Mitered Drawer Lock Joinery (raised for photo)- Each urn is cut from the same stock when at all possible to match the grain around the urn. To achieve that, an end then a face is cut and numbered alternately. The top and pedestal are then cut from the stock.
- The material is pre-sanded with 80 grit.
- The side edges and faces are then routed with miter drawer lock joinery, then rabbeted at the bottom to accept the bottom plate and screws, assembled and inspected for fit and grain match.
- The top and pedestal are routed raised panel then the bottom of each is rounded over on the router.
- The urn is then rough sanded, assembled and spot glued with 2P-10 (activated) and liquid nails, clamped and cured.
- The urn is then sanded up to 320 grit and inspected for faults.
- Two coats of hand rubbed stain are applied and cured.

How Rustica Urns are Different
- Mitered drawer-lock joinery rather than lap joints or flat miters, provides a secure locked joint. The joints are then spot glued with 2P-10 (activated) and a line of Liquid Nails. The wood will break before the joint.
-
Raised panel top with additional round-over rather than a simple chamfer or ogee, provides soft dimension.
- Raised panel matching pedestal base raises the urn and provides additional design dimension.
- No matte finish or sprayed on high gloss. Three coats of clear satin Lacquer are applied with each coat sanded to 3600 (matte) Where matte finish ends, we just start. We hand sand ending with 12000 grit giving the urn a mirror finish.
- Our Rustica "Dignity" urns are crafted with a unique wood that stands out like no other .
- When we say our urns are "fully" lined, they are "fully" lined.
- Our woods are either 5/8 or 3/4 thick to provide both a strong joint and a full 1/2 inch shoulder for screws that stay in and are easy to unscrew without stripping the heads. They accept a standard sized phillips head.
